Sammakko (”Frog” in English) is a publishing house founded 1996 and situated in Turku. With broad-minded, special choice of books and fresh, unique design Sammakko has grown steadily and successfully. Sammakko’s first volume was translation of Charles Bukowski’s The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills.

Nowadays Sammakko publishes about 40 new titles every year, both Finnish and translations; prose and poetry, variety of non-fiction, cartoons and children's books. Our big Finnish names are i.e. Riku Korhonen, Milla Paloniemi and Kreetta Onkeli, all of them award winners. Translations include American beat (William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac), the works of the gonzo doctor Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski and legendary Roberto Bolaño, as well as classic French literature (Charles Baudelaire, André Breton, Arthur Rimbaud). Also contemporary American and European literature, such as Dan Fante, David Mitchell, Marina Lewycka, Pablo Tusset, Wladimir Kaminer. In recent years Sammakko has concentrated also more on cartoons, like the Finnish Kiroileva siili (The Cursing Hedgehog) and translated ones such as Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine; soon to be joined by the Evil Penguins, and the joyful anarchy of Cyanide & Happiness.

Sammakko has also two book stores, one in Turku, near Main square in a melodramatic house that was built in 1885, in Kauppiaskatu 3, and one in central Helsinki, in Eerikinkatu 7.
